Healthy Coping Mechanisms

A coping mechanism is a behavior that a person uses to deal with stressful situations. Copimg mechanisms are intentional and develop over time. It is important to be able to know the different things that may be triggering for you in your day to day. There can be healthy coping mechanisms and unhealthy coping mechanisms. People can cope in an acitve / positive way or they can become avoidant and try to avoid stressors. Healthy coping mechanisms take time to practice and develop and it is possible to learn and continue learning coping mechanisms throughout life. 

Stress can have many negative effects on health. This is why coping mechanisms are essential for positive health and wellness in life. Some of the effects of stress include trouble sleeping, issues with blood pressure, and mental health issues.

The best way to handle stressors in a proactive way is to be aware of triggers and to be in tune with your needs. Good self care and balance is essential in stress management. Paying attention to thought patterns during times of distress is also important, practice reframing thoughts that are increasing stress, and continue checking in with yourself. Everyone has a different capacity / threshhold for stress so it is helpful to be aware of how you handle things and what you need to be at your best. Honor your needs and continue practicing and using healthy coping mechanisms.
